#80sHomeRenovationProject: Where It All Started - Hall Bath
Well, it's been a year and a half of extreme renovation and some nipping and tucking along the way at our #80shomerenovationproject. It's been a lot of fun working with these clients. Their home transformation is pretty amazing. Wait until you see all the before and after pictures.It all started with their upstairs hall bathroom which is the bathroom their grown kids used. From there, we basically redid the entire house, inside and out. I will be breaking down the renovation over several blog posts since it's a lot. Stay tuned for the whole story.
Let's take a look at their very 80s hall bathroom BEFORE...
It's a fairly typical builder grade bathroom of that era with vinyl flooring, fluorescent lighting, a very long 9 foot double sink vanity with the onyx countertop with built-in sinks and a sheet mirror. The height of the vanity was quite short, considering their son was well over 6' tall. The tub/shower had an onyx shower surround with a pony wall encased in the same material. I don't remember if that pony wall served any purpose whatsoever. I don't think it did which makes that design detail very odd. The vanity had been painted at some point and door pulls were added, but other than that, it was pretty much the original bath.
It was time to give this bathroom a complete overhaul. Their son was coming home from studying overseas so we had a little over a month to get the project completed - NO PROBLEM!THE PLAN: No more fluorescent lighting! That will be replaced with recessed lighting above each sink and wall sconces on either side of the framed mirrors. We also removed the medicine cabinet and closed up the wall behind it.
Here is a progress photo when all the electrical was pulled for the vanity area. As you can see, we also added a fan/light/heater for ventilation, a little extra light and it's always nice to have heat during those colder months when you exit the shower.
We installed a white quartz countertop with little reflects on it to complement the blues and grays in the new space. Such a clean, contemporary look and the best part is it's super low maintenance!
We went with rectagular undermount sinks which makes it so easy to clean. If you recall (scroll up), the original sinks were top mount with the scalloped detail made from the onyx material. Those details just create more nooks and crannies for yucky stuff to get stuck in - no thank you!
The client wanted to incorporate more storage so we designed a center tower to house some of the extra items that normally would go into a medicine cabinet. The tower also broke up the 9' long space and created some much needed height. The old bathroom sight line was very low. Everything seemed to stop at around 7' which is where the top of the mirror was.
And here we are at the AFTER...a taller custom built 9' wide furniture style vanity with a center tower, dual undermount sinks set within a quartz countertop, single faucets to keep the look very clean and simple, individual framed mirrors that I scored from Home Goods, and wall sconces on either side of each mirror.
Over at the shower area, we installed a larger, taller tub and tiled the space with an updated larger scale subway tile design.
One of my favorite elements in this space are the tile floors. There are gradations of light gray with subtle golden tones. It's very pretty. Here it is before grouting.
And of course, the shower system is a staple in every bathroom with a rain shower head and a hand held. The previous shower only had a tiny little shower head. This is definitely a more elevated experience!
