How to Style Your Bed with Pillows

Styling your bed with pillows is an easy way to add color, texture, pattern and personality. Anytime you feel like making a change, just swap out the bedding and of course, the coordinating pillows. But how do you style those pillows when there's a combination of european pillows, standard bed pillows and of course, the decorative or accent pillows?Below are several pictures of beds I've styled to help illustrate how easy it can be. In my opinion, you just have to play around with the combinations until you find a look you like. Some people prefer a more minimalistic look while others believe the more the merrier. I must confess, I'm a self-proclaimed "crazy pillow lady". I love accent pillows and have been known to fill several cart fulls at the store. I like having options to play with and once I narrow down the choices, the extras can be returned. Here are some examples:36th Street Bed4 layers:  On this Queen bed, the bed pillows are propped up with solid grey pillowcases in the back, yellow and white geometric  pillowcases in front of that, two graphic grey and white decorative pillows centered on either side and then a smaller boudoir pillow in front.  As you can see, the colors all tie in together while the patterns add visual interest.HGTV Power Broker Bedroom Detail4 layers:  In this room, since the wall already has a large graphic print from the wallpaper, we wanted the bed pillows to be quieter so as to not compete.  If we did a lot of patterns on the bed, it would be too distracting.  We laid the bed pillows horizontally, one on top of another, then propped a set of dark grey Euro pillows which matched the coverlet in front of the bed pillows, layered 3 smaller decorative pillows in a solid yellow in front of that and finished it off with a rectangular boudoir pillow in a diamond pattern which mimicked the quilt and the wallpaper in front of that.  I think we achieved a nice balance with the combination of pattern and solids.  The color combination and the textures make this King size bed very inviting!PB107 Master Bed3 layers:  This bed is styled similar to the one above  but we opted to line 3 decorative pillows in a row with the two on either end matching in a metallic fabric.  The center pillows is fun faux fur which adds great texture and the small boudoir pillow in front of that was actually covered in leftover fabric that was used for window treatments in the bathroom.  The contemporary pattern was a better fit than the solid pillow underneath.Suz Cosso Guest Bed4 layers:  This queen size bed is styled similar to the first photo.  Again, the main objective is to achieve visual interest by mixing colors, patterns and textures.  This guest bedroom is almost too pretty to get slept in.  The faux fur throw at the end of the bed also adds another layer of color, texture and softness to this bed ensemble.Suz Cosso Master BedAnd lastly, on this king bed, we ended up with 5 layers because of the staggered placement of the pillows.  The bed pillows are propped up in the back (solid white with a blue and white paisley pattern in front of it), then 2 euro pillows sit in front of them, followed by a euro pillow in the center flanked by 2 decorative blue boudoir pillows, topped off by a blue and gold modern floral boudoir pillow.  This bedroom looked and felt completely different with just the addition of new bedding, table lamps and art above the bed!If the photos above wasn't enough...here are two cheat sheets that you may find helpful when arranging pillows on your bed.  Ultimately, you should have fun with it without going overboard.pillow placement infographicpillow placementHow do you like to arrange your bed?  Do you enjoy lots of pillows or do you think they're just a hassle?  Leave me comment below, I'd love to know. Thanks for stopping by...Al sig (2)
