Home Makeover Story: Alisha’s Living Room Part 2
Welcome to Part 2 of Alisha's Living Room Makeover. If you missed Part 1, read all about it here.Alisha and I got together a week later to finish her Living Room. She had done her homework and ordered some curtain panels that I had recommended at the very start of the project. Unfortunately, the color scheme changed a little bit after Part 1 of the makeover so the curtain panels she ordered no longer worked. Not to worry, they're all returnable, but these are the things that a professional can help you with that you may not think to consider on your own.Designer Tip: Bring whatever you're using as the color inspiration with you on your shopping excursions to ensure color matching. In Alisha's case, it was the floral pillows on her couch.Here we are at Pier 1 Imports purchasing some more beautiful goodies to complete the space - decorative pillows, candle sconces and LED candles.
A quick stop to pick up curtain panels and rods and it was back to Alisha's house to do the install.Here's what we ended up with...The main sofa wall was pretty much done during Part 1 of this makeover, but we did add 2 more pillows to the center of the couch. This is a large piece of furniture so it can handle the extra pillows. We tried to find one large rectangular pillow but didn't find anything that worked, so two it is! The colors complemented the existing decor in the space. Click on the photo to enlarge it.
On the window wall, I installed two faux silk curtain panels in a Moss Green which is very similar to the green that's in the pillows, rug and artwork. These are purely decorative and are used to frame the window on both sides. The windows already had nice shutters on them which Alisha didn't want to cover, so the fixed panels on either side add just the right amount of softness. Notice we installed floor to ceiling height 95" panels. This takes advantage of the 8' ceilings and makes the room appear taller. Installing 84" panels would have truncated the wall making it appear shorter. Trust me, it makes a big difference!
On the opposite wall, as discussed in Part 1, we moved the extra sofa to the family room and created a chaise out of the modular pieces. I hung wall candle sconces on either side of the floor mirror. The best part are the LED candles that are operated via remote control...so fun! It's hard to tell from the picture, but the candle sconces are very pretty with a gold opalescence to it and I love how the flicker of the candlelight is reflected in the mirror. I bet this space is pretty sexy at night! We also added a faux fur throw and two decorative pillows to the chaise, as well as a small copper tray table for the future night cap she's bound to have sitting in this cozy corner. Oh, and as soon as stores start stocking inventory other than holiday decor, she can add a palm tree behind the chaise for some greenery.
What's pending...the TV/fireplace wall. The plan is to add two pre-fab bookcases to either side of the fireplace. Here's a preliminary look at one during assembly. The plan is to add the extension to the top of the bookcase so it again, takes advantage of the full height of the ceiling. Unfortunately, the other bookcase had a crack on one of the side panels...boo! These are the challenges that come with these types of projects. Annoying? Absolutely!
I look forward to Alisha getting this wall done with the help of a handyman. The brick fireplace will get a new mantel and tile surround and the pre-fab bookcases will get a more built-in look with the addition of crown and trim. There you have it...one room mostly done with a plan for her to complete the rest on her own. Time to move onto the next room!
